Huey Lewis and the News

Huey Lewis and the News is a rock band based in San Francisco, California and were in the top charts during the 1980s and 1990s. The band featured the core of what was to become The News. The Monday Night Live band began to record demo tapes in hopes of getting a record deal and in 1979, Huey Lewis and the News was formed with Bill as a founding member. When Back to the Future was being made, the band was asked to write a song for the film since Spielberg and Zemeckis had Marty McFly’s favorite band be Huey Lewis and the News. Initially, the band was inclined to deny the offer as they felt it would be hard to write a song called “Back In Time”. After giving it some thought, they found it pretty easy to write and they agreed to collaborate. They also ended up adding their song “The Power of Love” as the opening song in the beginning of the film.

In the audition scene where Marty’s band is in the school gym, Huey Lewis and the News can be found sitting in a row of chairs as the judges for the school competition.
